Stealing signs
The MetroWest Daily News writes about strange things that have been stolen in the area. Ex-Wellesley police chief William O'Loughlin (now chief in Milford, Mass.) recalls the bold theft of a heavy sign from the front of the Wellesley police station. More here.

Police open their house; Revolutionary War re-enactors camp out
DSC03998.jpgCelebrating Wellesley's Wonderful Weekend, the police department opened up its building to visitors, who got a chance to check out the holding cells,
target passing cars with
laser and radar speed guns and join in a cookout. Down the road, the Royal Irish Artillery group re-enacted the Revolutionary War, showing off cannons, tents and a cooking pit next to the Town Hall.

Hunnewell Fun Fair postponed due to rain
The fair, originally scheduled for this afternoon, will be held instead on Wednesday, May 24 from 3-6pm on the school grounds.

Wellesley this weekend: Parade, fireworks, kitchen tour and much more
It's one of the busiest weekends of the year in town. Get the complete Wellesley 125th anniversary schedule here, featuring the parade and fireworks on Sunday (wondering if events are still on in case of rain? Call Celebrations Committee at 781-235-1299). Also this weekend, Pancake Breakfast at the High School Saturday from 7:30am-2:30pm.... Open houses at the police, fire and other town departments on Saturday... 8th Annual Kitchen Tour, 11am-3pm on Saturday. Tour six fine homes. Booming business in fake Brazillian IDs
The MetroWest Daily News quotes Wellesley police officer Robert Gallagher saying $100 will get you a fake Brazillian ID these days in Framingham. Not that he's advocating you do that... Counterfeiters, meanwhile, "make a ton of money," he tells the paper. More here.

Spa dwellers getting younger
The Globe picks up on the trend of younger women and even girls getting pampered at spas and high-end hair and nail joints. Check out this classic comment from one Wellesley shop:
In Wellesley, at the Grettacole Day Spa and Salon, manager Gina Gonnella said that in the last two years she's seen an uptick in high school students getting $200 hair colorings and pedicures. ''This generation is spoiled," she said. ''And to be honest with you, some of the kids who come in really are brats." More here.

Wellesley cops nab court escapee after car chase
But not before the suspect smashed into a police car and created a dangerous situation on Rtes. 9 and 128 Monday. The suspect recently walked off during proceedings at a Framingham courthouse stemming from heroin possession charges (you really don't want to know where police said a co-defendent was hiding the drug...). More here.

Elm Bank Summer Concert Series details released
Mass Horticultural Society today announced a series of four summer concerts, featuring jazz, swing and Latin music, that will be held Friday nights from 6-8pm at Elm Bank Reservation. Here's the line-up, with bands described by Mass Hort:

The Dave Foley Band                                                

Specializing in rockabilly and country music, Dave Foley and his band delighted visitors at last year's Massachusetts Marketplace Festival. Foley's music is diverse and melodic and has been compared to the likes of Dwight Yokum. The band covers favorites in Swing, Country and Rock and Roll.

Ben Rudnick & Friends  

Ben Rudnick's singing style is instantly engaging and upbeat, with sing-along songs that kids love.

 

Admission is $10 per adult, $5 for Mass Hort members and children over 2, free for under 2 (kids will also receive concert-themed surprises). Also free if you join Mass Hort the night of a concert.

Wellesley override passes easily; Sunday RDF, library funding shot down

Here are the unofficial results supplied by the town, which says 62% of eligible voters submitted ballots:
 
Question 1 ($3.2 million increase in real estate and personal property taxes to cover education and general government operating budget)
 
YES 5,587  59.26%
 No  3,841  40.74%
 
Question 2 (additional real estate and personal property taxes to fund Recycling and Disposal Facility on Sundays)
 
Yes 4,306  45.76%
 NO 5,103  54.24%
 
Question 3 (additional real estate and property taxes to fund the branch libraries)
 
Yes 4,497  47.86%
NO 4,900   52.14%
 
Question 1 won in every precinct and Question 2 lost across the board. Question 3 was a mixed bag.

Special ed and MCAS testing
alice.jpgWellesley state rep Alice Peisch is sponsoring a bill that would enable special education students who fail their MCAS tests to be able to participate in graduation ceremonies and other senior-year activities. The bill has already passed in the House. More here.

What it's like to be a firefighter or police officer
Wellesley's youths get a chance to find out this summer through two programs, one called Wellesley Fire Rescuers (July 17-21; registration opened May 1) and the other dubbed Youth Academy (July 31-Aug. 4; registration begins June 1).  For students entering grades 6, 7 and 8 this fall. Both programs are free, but have limited space.

The Globe covers the upcoming election, giving space to those for and against the override.

The team is profiled in today's Boston Globe, which says anything less than a championship will be disappointing for a group of students that has already had some real heartbreakers the last couple of years. More here.

Holocaust heroes from Wellesley honored
The Peace Abbey in Sherborn added Martha and Waitstill Sharp's names to its Pacifist Memorial in honor of the late Wellesleyites' efforts to rescue hundreds or perhaps thousands of Holocaust victims during the 1930s and 1940s. More here.
