27th Run of the Charles. No, it's not a road race…

dedhamstart06

Though some participants in this canoe and kayak race on the Charles River April 26 will be running or walking their vessels (technically called “portaging”) around bridges and dams, including Cordingly Dam on the Wellesley/Newton lline.

Anyway, can tell you firsthand that this is a fun event. A few more fun facts:

* Yes, 2-person kayaks can sink if you push the weight limit, and yes, you can recover and actually win a prize despite going in the drink

* Yes, the Charles has rapids

* Yes, you can pretty much wing it, though there are plenty of serious paddlers in this race

* Yes, you will be passed by people who have no business passing you

Got a very in-depth program in the mail this week that lists the 6, 9, 19, 24 and 26 mile races, which wind up in Boston. Paddlers must submit applications by April 1. More info here.
