Type 1 diabetes cluster being investigated in Wellesley, Weston

A reader emailed to ask if we’d come across a recent TV report on diabetes and Wellesley (UPDATE: another reader, ML, says it will be on Channel 5 news on Thursday, March 26 at 11pm). We hadn’t but did last night happen across a good Boston Magazine article from February exploring investigations into whether Wellesley and Weston might be part of a Type 1 diabetes cluster.  The diagnosis last summer of Celtic Ray Allen’s young son with Type 1 diabetes raised awareness of the disease in the area and has helped to get some higher ups to become interested in the local situation, though the Boston Magazine story tells of a Weston woman’s longer-running campaign to get the CDC and others to take a closer look at what might be causing kids in the area to develop the disease.
