Wellesley bomb scare turns up inert WWII shell

The Wellesley Police and Fire Departments closed off Framar Road for a while Thursday night while the state Bomb Squad investigated a suspicious device that was buried in a backyard and unearthed by neighborhood kids.

It turned out to be an inert and not dangerous piece of military ordnance, or unexploded WWII munition that Wellesley Police said looked like an anti-tank missile. (Photos courtesy of Wellesley PD Photo)

The Globe has more details on the old mortar shell based on talking to people in the neighborhood.

By the way, the police department, which issued a NIXLE alert about the event, is moving to a new emergency notification system Friday AM. NIXLE got too pricey, according to the cops.
