Dustup over arrests of chalk-wielding Wellesley College students
The item jumped off the police blotter like a frog on a frying pan: Several young women arrested
for defacement and tagging of property after allegedly writing anti-war slogans and symbols on a Central St. sidewalk with
chalk. The police gave the women a chance to go if they would clean up the writing, but they refused and were hauled off to
police headquarters. The Townsman took the cops and students to task, arguing that the police need to use more common sense and that the students should have swallowed their pride
and cleaned up the site even if they didn't think they had done anything wrong.
Anyone who has ever strolled across the Wellesley College campus knows that students there work in chalk
like the Dutch Masters worked in oil paints, with sidewalk messages urging students to vote for this or that candidate and
attend this or that function. The jury is still out on whether the arrests will help or hurt the students' chances of
securing jobs doing chalk outlines of murder victims at crime investigation scenes. Meanwhile, area parents and art teachers
are taking no chances, and reportedly have begun confiscating sidewalk chalk from youngsters, not wanting to lead these
future Sidewalk Sams and Samanthas toward lives of crime (see here for a primer on graffiti).
Separately, letter-of-the-law supporters are now calling for a full-scale investigation by Wellesley Police
into Boston Marathon runners who allegedly littered Rte. 135 with orange peels and empty Gatorade cups.

You just never know what you might come across at the school. Around lunchtime on Wednesday,
some students gathered in a petting zoo at Severance Green featuring goats, kittens, ponys and sheep, while others tooted
their horns in a parade of balloon-decorated hybrid vehicles designed to boost awareness of eco-friendly
transportation options.

Wellesley College's art museum temporarily closing
The Davis Museum and Cultural Center is closing til next spring as the roof and windows are repaired.
The permanent collection has been moved into storage, while two current exhibits on Chinese art will remain open this spring.
"The humidity levels that we maintain in the building resulted in moisture condensing within the exterior
walls and roof of the building during exceptionally cold winter weather," explained director David Mickenberg.

When Candy Bar Sales Aren't Enough
According to The Boston Globe, more suburban public schools' parent organizations are acknowledging that
candy bar sales alone can't buy their schools all that they want or need.
Instead, raffle tickets that cost up to $500 and give the gambler a shot at high-end prizes such as cars
and vacations currently are in vogue. Some towns have even saved teachers' jobs through aggressive fundraising.
Wellesley, however, may be above it all. Last year its school committee said no to parents who raised
about $400,000 to bring back elementary school Spanish classes. Read more in The Globe here. DB
