Wellesley Public Schools Tuesday reached out to families, faculty and staff regarding the Norovirus, which hasn’t been spotted of late in the schools but has been the subject of increased attention in other parts of Massachusetts, including the Boston area.

A note from head of nursing Linda Corridan reads in part:

“To date we are not seeing evidence of the norovirus in the schools. Yes, we have children absent with vomiting and or diarrhea symptoms but not to the extent of the severe symptoms associated with the norovirus. The absentee numbers in the schools for children as well as the adults remain normal for this time of year. That said, with this type of virus, the status within any school could change quickly. The school nurses continue to monitor absentee numbers, clusters of students absent and the types of illnesses seen in the schools.”

Corridan recommends reading this fact sheet on noroviruses from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

At least a couple of freshly reported attacks on Wellesley dogs by coyotes are being investigated by the town’s animal control officer, Sue Webb. We received email from a reader Sunday night alerting us to the attacks.

One dog was attacked by a coyote by Cliff Road on Friday, though the dog is home recovering after surgery. The dog’s owner saw the coyote attacking the dog, which was released by the interloper when the owner ran outside. Another dog was attacked and killed nearby a couple of days later.

“It is mating season for wildlife, including skunks and coyotes, so I am sure to get more calls for a couple of weeks especially since there is not much snow to limit movement of wildlife,” Webb said, noting that dogs under 20 pounds have been targets.

She added that the coyote or coyotes could be almost anywhere in town since they range 5-plus square miles seeking food. Coyotes are most active at dawn and dusk, and can generally be scared off when people appear or make noise.

Webb says an injured deer was also killed by a coyote during the past week near Great Plain Avenue.

Chisum described the process in a note to WMS parents/guardians as “exhausting” and said “I realized I am not ready to leave Wellesley and I am excited about continuing my work with you all as I look forward.”

Chisum, who is listed as interim principal on the Wellesley Middle School website, was competing for the Brookline job vs. Deborah Holman, vice principal at Newton North High School.

We received a note from one reader who asked us for some clarification on Article 31 of the town warrant for Town Meeting, a citizen’s petition “to restrict the commercial use of gasoline powered, motorized portable machines that blow leaves, dirt and other debris off sidewalks, driveways, lawns or other horizontal surfaces…” The concern: That this attempt to amend a bylaw might restrict homeowners from using their own blowers in their yards. We went to Sara Preston, the resident behind the warrant, who says:

“To be clear, the article will NOT impact the rights of any homeowner to use any power equipment on their own property at any time. The goal is to limit the commercial use (meaning operated by commercial landscapers) of leaf blowers which have such significant health impacts both through noise and the harmful emissions and particulate matter they spew. You may be aware that several hundred cities and towns throughout the U.S. have already banned gas powered leaf blowers for health reasons. The whole state of Hawaii and nation of Israel have bans. Locally, we can look to Newton, Cambridge, and Brookline. Each of these communities has taken a different approach to limiting leaf blowers. I think it is also significant that the State of Massachusetts has a law that limits noise, for health reasons, at considerably lower decibels than leaf blowers create. Unfortunately for neighborhoods and for the operators of the blowers themselves, landscaping equipment is exempted. There exist many studies on the harmful impacts of noise, toxic emissions, allergens, and more from gas powered leaf blowers.”

Items on the town warrant will be addressed at Town Meeting, which starts March 26.

This isn’t the first time a Wellesley resident has stepped forward to do something about leaf blower use in town. Back in 2009, a bylaw went into affect to address when commercial outfits could employ noisy equipment in town.

Wellesley ABC is an organization in its 39th year that brings 6 girls from the underserved communities to Wellesley. They live in a program-sponsored house with a resident family, attend Wellesley High School, and go off to college, with a better chance of getting into college, being successful at college, and having a bright future.

Each runner must commit to raising $4,000. Wellesley ABC is happy to help you in your fundraising efforts. For more information about these numbers, please contact Chris Ketchen at the Wellesley Town Hall at 781.431.1019 x2205 or Mariann Youniss at 508.561.4321, and ask about the Wellesley ABC marathon numbers.

A men’s grooming/haircut business called Roosters is coming soon to Linden Square in Wellesley on the Roche Bros. side of the street alongside French Lessons, Divine Kitchens, etc. From the Roosters Men’s Grooming Centers website, you can see the outfit’s focus is strictly on men, men, men and boys. Among the services, a scary sounding 7-step facial shave. Roosters has some 50 franchises around the country, including many in Colorado and Texas, though none listed in Massachusetts. The first Roosters opened in Michigan in 1999.

Roosters’ emergence should provide competition most directly to the Linden Street Barber Shop, which opened recently at 153 Linden St., where Larry’s Barber Shop used to be.

One space still looking for a tenant is the old Rugged Bear location at 34 Central St., although the space has at least been kept vibrant via rotating Welelsley Community Art Project exhibits, the latest being a series of self-portraits by Tenacre Country Day School students.
