5th annual Luminary Night lights up Wellesley

Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club had a nice night Sunday for its 5th annual Luminary Night, as residents light up their decorations to celebrate the holiday season and to support of club’s charitable giving program. Wellesley Marketplace kickstarts holiday shopping season

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club’s annual Wellesley Marketplace event that took place Saturday at Wellesley Middle School drew 2,000+ shoppers and 135+ exhibitors (photos courtesy of WHJWC member Jo Kaplan Lee).

Wellesley Kitchen Tour only about a month away, tickets available

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club (WHJWC) will hold its 12th Annual Wellesley Kitchen Tour on Saturday, May 14 from 11AM to 3PM. During this fundraiser, attendees are invited into six of Wellesley’s most stunning kitchens, highlighting a variety of styles and concepts in kitchen design. (Could be a nice gift for Mother’s Day, which is May 8).

Although kitchens are the main focus of the tour, tour attendees will also get a peek at other first floor living spaces, providing architectural inspiration and decorating ideas.

Advance tickets cost $25, and are available online at www.whjwc.org, or as of May 1 at the Wellesley Roche Bros. The first 200 people to purchase a ticket online will also receive a free lunch at the Tour Café, to include a drink, sandwich and dessert. Tickets will also be available at each home on the day of the event for $30. Tickets are non-refundable, and the tour is held rain or shine. WHJWC is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, and all ticket purchases are fully tax deductible. All proceeds directly benefit local charities and scholarship programs.

Children under the age of 18 are not permitted inside tour homes due to insurance regulations. The addresses of tour homes will be announced on the WHJWC website on May 1. Wellesley Kitchen Tour is presented as a community fundraiser by the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club (WHJWC), and all ticket proceeds . For additional event information, please visit whjwc.org.

Wellesleyites: Last chance to buy Luminary Night kit

Dec. 1 is your last chance to order luminary kits and be a part of the town-wide celebration. You can order your kids online now at the Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club’s website or purchase them at Roche Bros. on Dec. 1 from 9 -11am. Kits are $15 and all proceeds will be donated to the Wellesley Friendly Aid Association and the WHJWC’s charitable giving program. Order by Dec. 1 and the kits will be delivered to your door step this week.

Share the light in Wellesley: 4th annual Luminary Night set for Dec. 5

The WHJWC is pleased to present the 4^th Annual Luminary Night on Sunday, Dec. 5. (Storm date: Dec. 12) This year’s event is sponsored by the Fund for Wellesley. On Luminary Night, families and businesses throughout Wellesley light luminary candles along their streets, sidewalks and doorsteps, creating a beautiful town-wide glow that symbolizes the spirit of community.

Luminary Night proceeds will directly benefit the Wellesley community, with the entirety being donated to the Wellesley Friendly Aid Association (WFAA) and the WHJWC’s Charitable Giving program. Last year, Luminary Night raised more than $23,000, with more than 20,000 candles lighting up the town.

“Luminary Night lets Wellesley residents ‘feel good while doing good,’” said event Co-Chair Gina Cohen. “Neighbors come together to share good cheer, while knowing their small financial contribution will go a long way toward helping fellow residents in need.”

“There is something magical about creating a town-wide glow during this darkest time of year,” said Carolyn Carroll, event Co-Chair. “We have worked very hard to expand the reach of Luminary Night this year, in an effort to meet increasing demand from neighborhoods all over Wellesley.”

Luminary kits cost $15, and include materials to create 10 luminaries. For the first time, WHJWC is offering online purchasing of Luminary Kits at its website. Kits may also be ordered using the form included in the November Wellesley MLP bill, and at Wellesley Marketplace, on Nov. 20 at the Wellesley Middle School. Kits will be delivered to homes the week of Nov. 29. Order early, as supplies are limited.

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club (WHJWC) is a volunteer organization of more than 80 women who give of their time through hands-on service and fundraising efforts. WHJWC’s annual fundraisers include Wellesley Marketplace, Luminary Night, Wellesley Phonebook, and Kitchen Tour. In 2009-2010, WHJWC’s charitable giving program contributed $137,000 to the Wellesley community.

Quilters and knitters

The Quinobequin Quilters, a not-for-profit group that formed in 1983 and meets regularly in Wellesley, will be holding its biennial Quilt Show in Needham at the Masonic Hall at 1101 Highland Ave. on March 26 (10am-8pm) and 27 (10am-4pm).

More than 100 quilts made by 50 members from Wellesley and surrounding towns will be on display, with styles ranging from traditional patchwork to more contemporary fabric art.

Visitors will be invited to vote for their favorites and kids can play a scavenger hunt, looking for shapes and symbols on the quilts. Vendors will be present for those who might want to start their own projects.

Separately, Wellesley Booksmith will be hosting its second Knit-a-Thon on March 27, ” when customers can knit amongst the books while listening to and enjoying the company of fellow fiber artists.” Kristin Nicholas (COLOR BY KRISTIN), Gail Callahan (HAND DYEING YARN AND FLEECE), Melissa Morgan Oakes (2-AT-A-TIME SOCKS), Wren Ross (CHANGING PATTERNS) and Jill Stover (co-owner of Yarns in the Farms) will be among those on hand to share their secrets.

The Knit-a-Thon presentations and consultations are free (with the exception of a workshop) and open to the public, but each event will be ticketed because capacity is limited. The Booksmith will also be running a charitable book fair all that day, with a percentage of sales donated to Women of Means (founded by Wellesley resident Roseanna Means).

Wellesley Kitchen Tour returns in May

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club took a year off last year from holding its Wellesley Kitchen Tour, but the event is back on again for this year: May 15, 11am-3pm.

The non-profit club’s tour will feature 6 Wellesley homes highlighting a variety of kitchen designs (keep your paws out of the fridges, but you will get to peek at other rooms on the first floors of these houses). Proceeds from the rain-or-shine event will benefit Metrowest charities.

Tickets will be available in May at Roche Bros. and Jarvis Appliance. They’ll also be available at any of the tour homes on the day of the event. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the day of. No kids under 18.

Wait 'til next year for Wellesley kitchen tour

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club is going to hold out until spring of 2010 for its next kitchen tour, typically an annual event. The club says it needs the time to “catch up with the tremendous growth of one of our most popular fundraisers” (the club last May raised a record $28K for scholarships and charities from the event). The decision to skip a year was made even before members realized how the economy would go; rather, the group has had a lot of interest in corporate sponsorship for the event and wants to hammer out a good plan.

The club’s next big fundraiser is the Marketplace Craft Festival set for Nov. 21.

Wellesley Hills Junior Women's Club: calendars and grants

The club will be publishing the 41st edition of the Wellesley Phone Book. Residents who would like their listing updated have until Jan. 15 to mail in their blue cards, which are located in the white pages of the current book. Advertisers will be receiving renewal forms by mail this month. Those not currently advertising but that would like to should contact Sarah Greene at wellesleyphonebook@hotmail.com or by calling 781-237-6942. Proceeds from the book go toward college scholarships for Wellesley students and to fill needs of local charitable organizations.

Speaking of which, the club is now accepting applications for scholarships and grants. Last year the club awarded more than $200K to college students and groups. Applications for both can be found at the club’s website and must be postmarked by Feb. 1, 2009.
