Morses Pond Lifeguard Olympics winners celebrate

Morses Pond lifeguards were divvied into two teams who competed in a series of events, including a swimming relay, kayak/paddle board race and lifeguard saving techniques. Shown left to right: Claire Clendenen, Dan Levy, Patrick Diaz, Zach Herbert-Burns, Will Hein and Harry Cramer.

Morses Pond closes this weekend at 7pm Sunday and the $5 daily fee will be waived on Sunday.

Wellesley extends Morses Pond hours to combat heat wave

Due to the extreme weather, Morses Pond Beach will remain open until 8 pm tonight this Thursday and Friday (July 21/22). All patrons entering after 6pm get in for free. The beach is usually open until 7pm.

MOPO Miler open water swim coming to Wellesley’s Morses Pond

The Wellesley Recreation Department is organizing the MOPO Miler, a 1/2 mile and 1 mile open swim at Morses Pond on June 25 beginning at 9:30am.

The free and fun non-sanctioned event is open to people 16 and older, though those under 18 need a parent’s permission. The event is designed to raise awareness of melanoma via the Glenna Kohl Fund, though no fundraising is required by participants.

T-shirts will be available for purchase for $20 and MOPO Miler bathing caps will be doled out to all participants so that lifeguards can see you.

Wellesley weekend preview: Shakespeare, trail walk, Fiske fun fair, book sale & more

Wellesley has its first really jammed-pack weekend of activities since the spring. Here’s a preview:

* Five members from Actors From the London Stage have taken up temporary residency at Wellesley College and are putting on free performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream Friday and Saturday at 7pm. It will be one of your first chances to check out the refurbished Alumnae Hall as well.

* Friends of the Wellesley Free Libraries host their fall book sale at the main branch. Members got a sneak peek Thursday, but the sale continues Friday-Sunday.

* Guided walk around Morses Pond at 9-10am with the Wellesley Trails Committee on Saturday.

* Annual Fiske Wild West Round-Up featuring games of chance and skill for all ages, arts and crafts, face painting, fun prizes and fabulous food. Join the fun this year for the famous Cowboy Strut, Moon bounce, slide, and Dunk Tank and so much more! The fundraiser takes place Saturday at Fiske Elementary School, 45 Hastings Street, 10am-2pm rain or shine.

* Wellesley United Soccer Club (WUSC) will host New England Revolution reps and the team’s mascot, Slyde, at Sprague field on Saturday from 10am-3pm. You can get info on the Revs, including info on WUSC night at a Revs game Oct. 2.

Wellesley looking to keep algae bloom at bay

Algae has started to bloom at Morses Pond due to the hot weather, so the town is going to treat it with copper late Friday afternoon. The pond is scheduled to re-open at its usual time on Saturday.

Rocky time for Morses Pond clean-up in Wellesley

Neighbors who live along the shore of Wellesley/Natick’s Morses Pond have joined forces with town organizations such as Public Works and the Natural Resources Commission to organize an invasive plant cleanup of the pond. Unfortunately, the “hydro-rake” used to do the job got bashed up on a bunch of rocks from the pond’s floor (pictures here), so the effort has been thrown a bit off course. Supporters of the plan, however, are looking to give it another go next week, though this time abutters will have raked material deposited on their shores and will need to get rid of it themselves.

Hand-to-plant combat at Morses Pond

The town has invited Morses Pond abutters to a workshop on the beach at 2pm on Sept. 6 to learn hand harvesting techniques and other ways to thwart water chestnuts and other invasive species messing up the water.

Extending the Morses Pond season

Wellesley’s Recreation Department has announced it is keeping Morses Pond open 3 days longer than the originally listed end date of August 17, 9:30 am – 7 pm. The pond will now stay open through August 20 (August 18 – 20 from 10 am – 6 pm.).
