Congrats on 25 years with Wellesley Public Schools

Five individuals were honored this week for their 25 years of service to the Wellesley Public School system by the Wellesley Education Foundation. The Chair Ceremony was held at Wellesley College and honorees were Wellesley Middle School teacher Marcia Bierer, Wellesley High secretary Mary Donahue, Hunnewell School custodian Larry Pellegrini, Hardy School psychologist Marcia Robinson and Wellesley Middle School teacher Margaret Pickett.

An early review of Wellesley’s Upper Crust Pizzeria

Wellesley blogger Bob Dwyer puts Wellesley’s new Upper Crust Pizzeria and its delivery system to the test. He writes that it wasn’t bad — pizza tasted good, salad was nothing special, delivery was faster than estimated and the whole shebang was a tad on the pricey side — but that there’s room for improvement.

Surprisingly, no advice from Bob on what sort of wine to have with the pizza… he regularly blogs about wine at The Wellesley Wine Press.

P.S. Don’t expect a review from me. Am one of those freaks who doesn’t eat pizza.

Despite flooding, Wellesley rabbi determined to host Passover dinners

Wellesley Weston Chabad Rabbi Moshe Bleich and wife Geni had their basement swamped with 3 feet of water this week, and suffered significant damage (photos) to furniture, computers, carpet, religious items and most of the food planned for Passover seder dinners at the Chabad. A hundred pounds of Matzah was saved at the last minute.

Those who wish to donate/help can contact the Chabad.

Wellesley Booksmith for sale, Gap’s lease expires in January

Interesting doings at the Central Square block of Wellesley Square.

First, Marshall Smith (the Smith in Brookline and Wellesley Booksmith) has announced he is looking for a buyer for the Wellesley Booksmith, according to a Townsman report.

Separately, a reader called our attention either out of concern or excitement that the Gap/Gap Kids’ lease is expiring in January according to the website for Linear Retail. A partner with Linear confirmed that the lease on the 15,804 sq.ft. space currently occupied by the Gap/Gap Kids does expire in January but that the Gap would like to stay.

Qdoba franchiser having money problems

CORRECTION: The Globe has corrected its original story to clarify that a franchise group operating Qdoba restaurants in the Boston area is experiencing financial issues, not Qdoba Restaurant Corp. Qdoba notes that it is in fact expanding, with 62 new restaurants opened in fiscal 2009 and an additional 30 to 40 new restaurants expected to open in fiscal 2010.

The Boston Globe reports on Wellesley-based Qdoba franchiser Chair5 Holdings having financial problems, including a lawsuit from a food distributor. Wellesley’s Qdoba opened on Linden St. about 2 years ago.

Wellesley under water

UPDATE: Rte. 9 was cleared for traffic on Tuesday morning.

The Wellesley Police Department issued a notice Monday night that Rte. 9 eastbound and westbound between Weston Rd and Natick was closed due to flooding.

The Fire Department has been busy too, receiving dozens of calls from owners of flooded homes, according to the Townsman and Globe.

Wellesley High School’s cafeteria got an unexpected washing as well.

Townsman welcomes new reporter

Some members of the Townsman staff have seemingly been there forever, but the main reporter’s slot has turned over frequently in the past year or so. The most recent reporter, George Hassett, has apparently moved on after joining the Townsman late last year, and Teddy Applebaum is the new byline in town.

Applebaum has been writing for Gatehouse, the Townsman’s owner, since last fall. He enjoys re-arranging chairs in his spare time.
