Babson College grads to don “green” caps and gowns

Babson College’s school colors are green and white, and 2010 grads will emphasize the green when they wear caps and gowns made from recycled bottles. Babson says the fabric is spun from molten plastic pellets and that each gown is made from about 23 bottles. Biodegradable dishes and cups, as well as recycled paper for diplomas and programs will add to the school’s environmental sustainability efforts.

Beep Day all fun and games till someone crashes their cars

The Wellesley High School senior tradition of parading in their cars took a bad turn when a four-car accident sent 9 kids to the hospital. Imagine how bad it might have been if they hadn’t been prebriefed by Wellesley police on traffic guidelines for the event.

Wedding train

A couple said their wedding vows at on an MBTA commuter train at Wellesley Farms, reliving that romantic moment when they met at the train. And yes, the train was actually on time, which is probably a good omen for the lovebirds.

Bear facts

Those winter moths are a pain, but it could be worse: just think if they were black bears. Fortunately, only one of those was spotted this year, down around Reeds Pond.

Wellesley College police chief’s cruiser stolen

Someone picked the wrong car to steal when they took off in unmarked black Ford Taurus belonging to Wellesley College’s police chief in November. You’d have thought the doughnuts on the front seat would have been a dead giveaway. Anyway, the car turned up in Boston, and an investigation continues.

Babson tries to get last laugh on Tina Fey

Babson College Prez Leonard Schlesinger went for broke by posting a YouTube video early in the year in an effort to woo 30 Rock actor Tina Fey to campus after she made a disparaging remark about Babson Lacrosse during a national telecast of an awards ceremony. No sign of her yet. Maybe they can settle for Alec Baldwin.

Ranking Wellesley College and Babson

The annual U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings are out and the local colleges fared well as usual (methodology here). The magazine put Wellesley College at #4 among liberal arts schools behind only Amherst, Williams and Swarthmore (Wellesley’s tuition and fees are listed as $36,640). Babson grabbed honors as the top entrepreneurial undergrad program for the 12th year in a row. Babson ranked #25 among business programs and #22 in international business.
